Citizen of the Year Award Announced!

The Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce chose the Poultney Fish and Game Club  as its Citizen of the Year for 2021 – 2022.

The award is given each year to a Poultney area citizen who has contributed to the betterment of the Poultney community, provided continuing outstanding service to the community, and who demonstrates the true spirit of service, qualities representing the finest ideals of citizenship in the Poultney area.

The Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award is given to “unsung heroes”.  These people selflessly volunteer to help others, not because they are paid, or for awards or recognition, but simply because they want to do it.  The Poultney Fish and Game Club was among the nominees this year.

The Poultney Fish and Game Club works to provide outdoor activities and learning about the environment, its wildlife, and the Vermont laws, including holding events like the Kids Fishing Derby and the Frosty Derby.  The club has been active since the 1940’s, with current members carrying on Vermont’s tradition of outdoor activity.  It is one of the oldest such clubs in Vermont.  .

The club also provide and assists in programs, events, and camps for people of all ages.  Their members are also involved in many other volunteer activities, including the rescue squad and fire department, churches, and schools.  The lead officers have been invited to accept the award.

The 2021 Citizens of the Year will be honored with the presentation of a personalized slate clock.  A reception will be held when it is safe to do so.  Representatives of the club  will also be part of the Official Tree Tapping Ceremony at the next Maplefest in March, and serve as Grand Marshall in the next Fourth Of July parade.

Jim Marchaland, president of the club, responded  with thanks to the Chamber and those who nominated him, and will work with the club to find a suitable date for the awards to be given out.   The Chamber does expect the date may be after hunting season.   A recipient may receive the award one time.  A list of present and past recipients is available on the Chamber website , on the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page, or call 802-287-2010.
