Meet Dr. Susan Johnson DVM -Owner and Veterinarian of Poultney Veterinary Hospital.
Having a local veterinarian is really important because they serve as a cornerstone for public health, animal welfare and a compassionate neighbor all in one. The don’t just treat animal sickness, they prevent it through vaccinations, parasite control and advice to keep the community’s pets healthy which prevents outbreaks of disease.
Poultney Veterinary Hospital also helps manage issues with stray animals, provides behavioral advice to help prevent dog bites and is a key resource to our animal control officer.
In 2017 Dr. Susan Johnson bought the Poultney Veterinary Hospital. She grew up in Vermont and went to college at UVM, where she earned a BS in Biology in 1991. She spent a lot of her childhood working with dogs and horses. Later she went on to Colorado State University where she received her M.S. in Reproductive Physiology in 1996 and her DVM degree in 2001. After graduation she returned and has been licensed and accredited in Vermont since 2001. She then also became licensed in New York in 2021. Her accreditation allows her to write both interstate and international health certificates so that animals can travel with their families.
Dr. Johnson and her team help guide families in the area through the entire life cycle of their pets, from the joy of a new puppy or kitten to the heartbreak of saying goodbye. The emotional support is invaluable. Dr. Johnson believes a local vet gets to know your pet and your family over the years, which allows much more personalized care.
Dr. Johnson currently lives in Center Rutland with her family, but spends many long hours in Poultney. She loves the small-town community and enjoys having patients from all over the NY and Vermont area.
Dr. Johnson is trying to come up with a sustainable plan for the future. She hopes to expand with an addition to the current building but has to ensure consistent staffing, specifically veterinary coverage. She just can’t be the only veterinarian available to keep up with all the area needs.
